New Core Faculty Profile: Vivienne Sze

October 2, 2013

This is part of an ongoing series about new MTL core faculty members.

Sze_DSC05895-single.jpgProfessor Vivienne Sze joined MIT's EECS department as an Assistant Professor in August. She received her B.A.Sc. (Hons) degree in electrical engineering from the University of Toronto in 2004, and her S.M. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from MIT in 2006 and 2010, respectively. From September 2010 to July 2013, Dr. Sze was a Member of Technical Staff in the Systems and Applications R&D Center at Texas Instruments (TI), where she designed low-power algorithms and architectures for video coding. Dr. Sze's research interests include energy efficient algorithms and architectures for portable multimedia applications.

Her Energy-Efficient Multimedia Systems Group, aims to develop and implement energy-efficient and high-performance systems for various multimedia applications such as video coding/processing, imaging, and vision. They focus on joint design of algorithms, architectures, circuits, and systems to enable optimal tradeoffs between power, speed, and quality of result. Accordingly, their work traverses various levels of abstraction from energy-aware algorithm development for signal processing to efficient architecture design and low-power VLSI circuit implementation.
