Prof. Pablo Jarillo-Herrero joined the MIT physics department in January 2008. Prof. Jarillo-Herrero's research interests lie in the area of experimental condensed matter physics, focusing on quantum electronic transport and optoelectronics in novel low-dimensional materials, such as graphene and topological insulators. Jarillo's group focuses on understanding the novel electronic properties of these materials stemming from their unique electronic structure. For example, electrons in graphene behave in many ways similar to "charged neutrinos," providing a testbed for examining fundamental physical processes. His group's more applied examinations of these low-dimensional materials chart the rich electron-photon coupling and electron relaxation dynamics, which are of great importance for energy harvesting and photodetector devices.
